Soy & Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a condition caused by low bone density.  About 20 million Americans suffer from Osteoporosis.  Weak and fragile bones increases the risk of bone fractures.

Soybeans, known as an excellent source of protein and minerals, are popular in the diets of Asian countries. There are fewer cases of fractures due to osteoporosis in Asians compared to people in western countries. Studies have shown that the higher consumption of soy products is reported to:

  • Prevent or delay the onset of bone loss
  • Help in the maintenance of peak bone mass
  • Help maintain the spinal bone mineral density

Consumers are encouraged to consider the consumption of soy-based products rather than isolated bioactive components of soy such as isoflavones (soy pill or isoflavone pill).  The phytochemicals present in soy may be more efficacius when consumed with soy foods.

Both men and women may benefit from incorporating soy foods into their diets as soy is also reported to have a number of other health benefits including cholesterol-lowering properties and anti-carcinogenic effects.
